Council sits on £20 million while businesses risk going under
The Conservative government has made billions available to help local enterprises survive the coronavirus crisis. But Croydon Labour is failing to pass on the funds to the businesses that need it.
Croydon Council has received £60 million from the government to distribute to Small and Medium Sized businesses (SMEs). The grant was made by the Conservative government to preserve jobs and protect the economy during lockdown.
Businesses have been able to apply for the grant since March. But in an alarming revelation, it has become clear that a staggering £20 million has yet to make its way to those who are entitled to it.
Croydon’s Conservative Councillors have been helping local businesses navigate the web of bureaucracy and secure the funds they are entitled to. They have now launched a new support service to identify others in the same position and do what they can do help.

Jason Perry, Conservative spokesperson for jobs and the economy says, “Local businesses are the beating heart of Croydon’s economy. They create jobs and boost our prosperity. Labour may not share our belief in the importance of business, but they have a duty to deliver.
“It’s time for Labour to get a grip on the situation. With each new delay in payment, the risk of job losses and business closures increases. Labour must listen and act.”
Conservative Councillors are in regular contact with businesses across the borough. Some claim that they are struggling to pay salaries because of the delays. Others state that whenever they contact the council, they are told they will receive a call back in 48 hours. But the call never comes.
