It has been raised with me that there are concerns that charges are to be introduced for replacement bins.
I have looked into the proposals which I do not believe are finalised at this point.
To put the issue of bin replacement into context, c.4,000 replacement bins are provided by Croydon Council every month. This means that on average, every household has a new bin every three years although most of us have never required a replacement bin.
At the Mayor's Question Time in Sanderstead last Tuesday, Mayor Perry stated that the new bins cost around £45-50 and the new charge of £5 is an administrative fee rather than a cost for the bin. It is worth noting that some neighbouring local authorities charge the full cost of a replacement bin. The £5 admin fee would not be chargeable when replacing bins damaged in the process of emptying the bin; each bin lorry has a set of cameras on it so it is easy to see if the bin was thrown by one of the crew. Mayor Perry also stated that the fee would only be applicable when replacing the general waste bin - there will be no charge for the recycling bins.
