The Kenley Ward Panel met recently to discuss ongoing community safety initiatives and the progress of actions from the previous meeting took place in February 2024. The session was productive with key updates provided by the Police Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT).
These updates included the theft of parcels left by delivery companies and the placement of tourniquet bleed kits in community hubs such as Old Lodge Lane Baptist Church and Kenley Memorial Hall.
Refreshing support domestic abuse service posters
The Ward Panel raised concerns about the outdated appearance of posters advertising support services for survivors of domestic abuse. It was suggested that new, laminated posters could help them stand out more effectively. Cllr Ola Kolade highlighted the council’s newly adopted Violence Against Women and Girls strategy, underlining the importance of preventing domestic abuse. Additionally, the police team reported that the Metropolitan Police were rolling out more support for survivors. Ola committed to working with the SNT to secure and appropriately place new posters across the ward.
Police report and community concerns
The Ward Panel was informed that the Safer Transport team conducts monthly road checks, and the SNT team is available to focus on specific roads if requested. The police shared that they now have access to an additional marked vehicle, enabling them to be more visible in the community. They also provided an overview of crime statistics and their work with local shops to address the issue of shoplifting.
Future priorities
The SNT proposed a shift in the ward’s priorities, suggesting that ‘theft offences’ replace ‘burglary offences’ as a more encompassing category. The Ward Panel agreed on the following priorities for the SNT:
- Violence against the person
- Theft offences
- Vehicle offences
Looking ahead
The next Ward Panel meeting is scheduled for October 30th at 6:30 PM, with the venue to be confirmed.
