Croydon’s Conservative councillors have formally requisitioned an Emergency Council Meeting to discuss the dire situation our Council finds itself in:
- Croydon Council’s total debt is approaching £2 billion - the highest of any London borough
- As a result, within a matter of weeks, the Council will be officially declared bankrupt
- This means vital services will be stretched to breaking point, impacting all of us but especially our most vulnerable residents who rely heaviest on Council support
- Senior Council officers, including most recently the Chief Executive, have been leaving in their droves
It is simply not acceptable for Cllr Tony Newman as Labour Leader and Cllr. Simon Hall as the Labour Cabinet Member for Finance to remain in post, having overseen this debacle.
That is why our Conservative Councillors have demanded a meeting to debate the motion:
“This Council has no confidence in Cllr Tony Newman and Cllr Simon Hall and calls for their immediate resignation.”
The letter was sent to Mayor Maddie Henson on Friday 4th September:
Dear Madam Mayor,
Re: Requisition for an Extraordinary Council Meeting
Owing to the recent series of high profile Council staff resignations; the imminent declaration of bankruptcy by Croydon Council and the eye-watering £1.5 billion debt Labour has accrued, we feel it is vital that this meeting is called to hold the current Administration to account for their disastrous policy decisions.
Their choices have already had a hugely detrimental impact on everyone in our wonderful town – but in particular Croydon’s most vulnerable residents who rely most heavily on the Council’s services.
Therefore, as specified by the Croydon Council Constitution, we five Councillors hereby submit a Requisition to urgently call for an Extraordinary Council Meeting.
The business to be transacted shall be a debate and a vote on the following motion:
‘This Council has no confidence in Cllr Tony Newman and Cllr Simon Hall and calls for their immediate resignation.’
Kind Regards,
Cllr Jason Perry - Leader of the Opposition, South Croydon
Cllr Lynne Hale - Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Sanderstead
Cllr Jason Cummings - Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Shirley South
Cllr Mario Creatura - Coulsdon Town
