Repairing the road outside Aldi in Coulsdon Town
17/08/2016 12:03:00......Posted by Mario Creatura

It's great to have just learned that Croydon’s Highways team will shortly be commencing carriageway repairs on the Brighton Road Roundabout opposite Aldi.

We've been pushing for this to happen for some time, so it's reassuring to hear this work is scheduled to commence on 22nd AugustDue to the locations and nature of these works it is inevitable that some disruption will occur, these works are being scheduled to be carried out, between 07:00-19:00.

The below letter will be distributed to local residents and businesses in the vicinity with a letter drop notification by 18 August 2016:

'Carriageway Repairs

I am writing to inform you that Kier Highways, on behalf of Croydon Council, will shortly be commencing repairs at the location/s and date/s below:

Date: Commencing 22nd August 2016

Location: Brighton Road

These essential works are expected to take 5 weeks to complete, however every effort will be made to complete the works as soon as possible.

The repair works will take place between Brighton Road Roundabout opposite Aldi and its Junction with Chipstead Valley Road. Due to the nature of these works it is inevitable that some disruption will occur and access to Brighton Roadwill be severely impacted by the use of multi way temporary traffic signals. This traffic management will be monitored and amended to include a one way system in Chipstead Valley Road if the lights are too impactive. For this reason it is recommended that where possible you use alternative routes, or allow extra time to complete your journey.

Please be assured that all businesses will be open as usual during these works.

Advance driver / resident information boards will be in place before the works commence, advising of the precise dates and times of the repair works.

Please however note that unforeseen circumstances (e.g. inclement weather conditions) may necessitate a change to the scheduled dates and information on road signs will be changed accordingly. Please check the road signs regularly for any updates.

To enable the Contractor to undertake the works, on-street parking will be suspendedeach day. We also kindly ask that with forward planning vehicular access to and from properties adjacent to the road are reduced to a minimum during the works hours. Pedestrian access will not be affected.

The on-street parking suspensions that will be in place within the works area are all day commencing 22nd August 2016 for approximately 5 weeks. Throughout the works every effort will be made to minimise the number of on-street parking areas affected by the works.

Please note that penalty charge notices (PCN’s) will be applied to vehicles parked within the suspended areas during the works hours and/or vehicles relocated.

Due to the above we would urge all residents to ensure that their vehicles are moved from the suspended areas in order to avoid any delays to the works as well as incurring any charges.

If your vehicle is relocated please contact TRACE on 0207 747 4747, who will provide you with an exact location of your vehicle.

We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause residents; however we want to ensure that all works carried out on the Croydon network are to the highest standards to ensure value for our residents.

Beware Bogus Callers

Croydon Council does not permit its employees or contractors to undertake work on private property during the course of any scheme. If anyone offers such work they will not be a council approved contractor and should be treated with caution. Any scheme undertaken by a council approved contractor does not require cash payments.

Cold calling doorstep traders offering to carry out home maintenance work such as driveway repairs and roofing are a problem in Croydon. These traders can be very persuasive and can intimidate you into agreeing to have work undertaken. The advice from Croydon Trading Standards Service is to say “NO” to all cold calling traders – Every Time. If they will not leave or you get into difficulties, then call Croydon Trading Standards on

Thank you for your cooperation whilst we carry out this essential upgrade. If you require any further information do not hesitate to contact us by email: HighwaysMaintenance@croydon.gov.uk or tel: 020 8726 6000 Ext 52815.'

South London Downs National Nature Reserve
26/07/2019 10:47:00.......Posted by Ian Parker

I joined Natural England and The City of London Corporation in celebrating the declaration of The South London Downs National Nature Reserve.  It's the second largest NNR in London and will include Coulsdon, Kenley and Riddlesdown Commons, Farthing Downs, Happy Valley, Hawkhirst Wood and the Sanderstead to Whyteleafe Countryside area.  On the edge of a large urban area, the declaration represents and underlines the importance of these well loved places for wildlife and local people.

We should fight to protect these areas and treasure them for future generations.

Purley & Coulsdon Clubs for the Elderly
24/07/2019 15:17:00.......Posted by Ian Parker

I was pleased to attend the Annual General Meeting of this local charity.  The object of the charity is to provide 'relief for older people within the immediate area in any manner which may be deemed by law to be charitable, in particualr by the provision of activities which meet their social health and educational needs such as luncheon care and recreational programmes'.

At the AGM we heard from Sarah Crane the Club's co-ordinator.  It was reassuring to hear that the Club is fulfilling its objectives with a wide range of activities aimed at the elderly.

Coulsdon Town councillors were in a position to provide funding to the organisation from our ward budgets and we wish the Club, its Committee and all its volunteers every success in the coming year.

Coulsdon Comrades Club
30/06/2019 17:20:00.......Posted by Ian Parker

It was fantastic to join members of the Coulsdon Comrades Club at their centenary celebrations yesterday.  Those present learnt a lot about the huge contributions and sacrifices made by Coulsdon residents

The Coulsdon branch of the Comrades of the Great War Club was formed on the present site in 1919. With 400 members, the Club continues to thrive and provides a friendly atmosphere for members and their family and friends.

It was a pleasure to meet key volunteers and recognise the valuable service they provide to the community.

Frames Snooker Academy (CR5 2NF) will be hosting a series of fun and engaging introductory snooker sessions for new players aged 10-16, as part of a national programme. These sessions are only £1 to attend.

The scheme will also develop a selection of ‘Young Leaders’ (aged 14-16), who will learn skills such as marketing, safe sport delivery, and in creating an engaging club experience for all.  They will become role models, encouraging other young people to take up our sport by joining their local club.

Bus Routes 404 and 434
18/06/2019 11:36:00.......Posted by Ian Parker

Following the development of Cane Hill we have worked with the London Borough of Croydon to provide a bus service to the new area, some of which is currently more than five minutes walk from a bus route. TfL received over 600 responses to a recent consultation. The removal of the direct 434 link from Rickman Hill to Purley received much opposition.

TfL now intend to change their proposals. They will hold a further local consultation later this year on revised proposals to leave route 434 unchanged and divert route 404 to Cane Hill as well as Tollers Estate.

Thank you to all who joined us in lobbying for the Cane Hill service.
