After a long delay, Croydon Council has finally published its much-anticipated intentions for opening up the CALAT car park on Malcolm Road so that residents can access it more readily for parking. The official documents can all be found online here. In it the Council application says: 'The temporary closure of Lion Green Road Car Park in Coulsdon town centre for redevelopment has provided the opportunity to extend the use of the Smitham Croydon Adult Learners and Training (‘CALAT’) Car Park (the ‘Car Park’) currently accessed from Chipstead Valley Road, Coulsdon, to introduce public use, as a temporary measure, as one way to accommodate any displaced short term parking from Lion Green Road Car Park. '1.2 The proposal is to enable general public use of the Car Park by accessing the Car Park via the existing entrance on Chipstead Valley Road. '1.3 It is intended that this be a temporary access point ahead of the submission of a second planning application to create a new vehicular access point via Woodcote Grove Road. 1.4 The planning application is for a change of use from D1 Community Use to Sui Generis to allow public parking.' If approved the plan is to: '3.2 This proposal is to utilise the second car park, accessed via Chipstead Valley Road, as a public car park, operated on a pay and display basis from Monday to Saturday from 7am to 6pm and allow a four hour maximum stay. The car park hosts 32 spaces including two disabled parking bays. Proposed charges are: Up to 1 hour £0.50; 1- 2 hours £1.00; 2-4 hours £2.10.' This is great news and something that we have been pushing the Council to do. Parking is one of the greatest challenges facing residents in Coulsdon, so anything that can alleviate the pressure should be welcomed.
