False rumours about Chipstead Valley Surgery

A few residents have contacted me after hearing rumours about the surgery on Chipstead Valley Road closing.
The surgery has assured residents that nothing of the kind is planned.
Dr Peter Newlands writes:
"I can fully reassure you about our commitment to keep and improve our branch surgery at Coulsdon. We have between 6-7,000 patients who attend this surgery which is a little under half of our patient population. All the Doctors and nurses work at both our practice sites and we feel both the doctors and patients like it this way.
About two years ago we began a duty doctor system where one doctor would see all the urgent cases for that day and not have any booked appointments, whereas previously the 'urgents' as we call them were distributed amongst all the available doctors. The duty doctor is sometimes based at Coulsdon but more often at Purley because of the room availability there.
We do not have enough doctors to have a duty doctor at each site as this would severely reduce available appointments.
With regard to booked appointments the spaces are often available at the Coulsdon surgery when the Purley slots are full so Purley patients travel to Coulsdon at least as much as Coulsdon patients travel to Purley.
Because Chipstead Valley forms a village around the surgery we could never leave the area as it actually adds to the viability of the Woodcote Medical Practice as a whole.
With regard to the Lion Green Road Development NHS England could not support/fund the building that we were offered and the Council has to get the best value for the ratepayers of Croydon. We will still look for new opportunities in Coulsdon but in the meantime have redecorated the whole surgery which I'm sure the patients have noticed and appreciate."
