'Dear Councillor Newman,
RE: CCTV Cameras in Coulsdon Town centre.
We three Coulsdon West councillors and Steve O’Connell GLA would appreciate you and the Council taking the time to consider installing greater CCTV in the north of Coulsdon Town.
Over the past few months there have been a number of high profile criminal incidents, most notably the attempted robbery of NatWest Coulsdon using gas cylinders in December. We have all been contacted by a number of residents who are concerned at the perceived increase in crime in this part of the borough.
We are aware that generally Coulsdon is a relatively low crime area. Despite this residents are concerned that the two current CCTV cameras serving the centre and south of the town fail to record incidents where much crime is reportedly taking place. Key locations not covered include GT’s gun shop and Coulsdon Post Office, both on Chipstead Valley Road.
This is exacerbated by us sharing our superb police officers with the community in New Addington. The journey time between these two areas is considerable, delaying the time they can respond to calls for help. This practice does little to comfort our residents.
Whilst we understand the pressures on our police force and general Council resources, we join our residents’ associations in strongly urging you and your administration to consider supporting the residents of Coulsdon and implementing CCTV cameras in the requested locations.
Your thoughts would be appreciated.
