A letter from the Coulsdon West Residents' Association to Cllr Tony Newman, Croydon Council Leader, regarding the proposed closure of Purley Pool:
'Dear Councillor Newman,
Proposed closure of Purley Swimming Pool
Coulsdon West Residents’ Association (CWRA) urges you to reconsider the above closure due to the negative impact it will have on our residents. CWRA fully endorses and supports the views expressed in the recent letter you have received from East Coulsdon Residents’ Association. Purley Pool is the only leisure facility in the South of the Borough in spite of promises made to us by previous administrations. It is well used by both young and elderly residents because it is easily accessible by bus and train, which cannot be said for Waddon or Addington. You, yourself, publicly stated that you would keep Purley Pool open!
It appears to be a rather perverse decision given that the public are encouraged to take more exercise to aid better health. We have been denied the promised skate park and leisure centre plans associated with Cane Hill and Lion Green Road so we must conclude that the South is being discriminated against in terms of Council investment even though the many planning approvals in the South will generate substantial revenue for the Council.
CWRA requests that our residents should be treated fairly by your administration and as such the decision to close Purley Swimming Pool should be reconsidered.
Secretary, Coulsdon West Residents’ Association'
