What is Neighbourhood Watch – Croydon?
The aim of Croydon Neighbourhood Watch is to bring neighbours together to create strong, friendly, active communities where crime and anti-social behaviour are less likely to happen. It’s about people looking out for each other, crossing barriers of age and background to create real communities where no one has to feel vulnerable or isolated. Where neighbours look out for those in your road who are elderly or vulnerable. Residents are encouraged to report all incidents to the relevant agencies to try and help prevent crime before it happens.
What would I have to do?
Becoming a NHW co-ordinator does not cost anything except a little bit of time. The minimum amount of time required to spend on NHW matters would be to deliver the Croydon Eye newsletter just three times a year and to pass on any relevant information from the police's weekly email update to your watch. You're also encouraged to report all incidences and suspicious activity to the relevant agencies. If you see something that may help the Police in solving or preventing a crime make a note of what you have seen and pass this information on to the Police. You can contact your local SNT, call 101 or in an emergency dial 999.
What happens once I am a NHW co-ordinator?
Once your watch has been set up, a pack will be sent which includes a welcome letter for all your members to inform them you are the new NHW co-ordinator, an ID card, NHW window stickers and information booklets. Residents can sign up to receive the weekly email updates directly from the NHW office, details of this would be included in the welcome letter.
If required NHW meerkat lamppost signs would also be put up to indicate your road is a NHW area.
NHW Co-ordinators get a chance to meet at training and awareness sessions run twice a year by the Committee and the annual conference. All NHW co-ordinators are invited to both events, however, attendance at these events is not mandatory.
How do I apply?
A police check will be carried out on all potential NHW Co-ordinators. Once your check has been cleared you will be sent a welcome pack to get your watch up and running.
