Labour will not fund essential Cane Hill access road

‘Under no circumstances will we fund the essential Cane Hill access road’, was the message from the new Labour administration at Tuesday evening’s Council meeting.
New Coulsdon West Councillor Mario Creatura had asked the leader of the Council, Cllr Tony Newman, if he was willing to match the pledge of the previous Conservative administration and pay for the essential access road.
“Cane Hill is a very important development for the future of Coulsdon, but Cllr Newman has categorically said that he will not match the £2 million Conservative pledge to fund the essential bypass.”
Cllr Newman wants to try to get the cash from Transport for London (TfL) and the developer. When asked who would pay for the essential road if he is not successful the Council Leader said: “Let me be crystal clear, the council taxpayers of this borough are not going to be paying for the road.”
“This is very disappointing,” said Cllr Creatura. “This is an essential part of the infrastructure needed to make the Cane Hill development work for Coulsdon. I’m dismayed by his blasé attitude towards the reality of the situation. If the Labour administration fail to get the developer or TfL to pay for the road, then Cllr Newman’s response indicates the road simply will not be built.
“That’s just not acceptable. The people of Coulsdon believe the road is an essential part of the scheme working. I’ll continue my work to try to convince Cllr Newman to change his mind for the good of my residents.”
