Ministry of Defence say Kenley Airfield is safe 13/02/2015 09:13:00.......Posted by Steve Hollands
The Ministry of Defence has confirmed it does not have plans to sell Kenley Airfield after announcing land across the country would be sold to save money.
At the end of January Michael Fallon, Secretary of State for Defence, announced that the MOD would consider whether it needs 57 sites within the M25, and what the right number of airfields is.
He said: “Every year we should be looking to take out unnecessary cost, to improve productivity, to sweat our assets so that we can better support the frontline.”
But today a spokeswoman for the MOD said: “The MOD does not have any plans to sell Kenley Airfield.”
The MOD owns the airfield within the perimeter track, while the City of London owns the land outside the track.
Steve O’Connell, Kenley councillor and member of the Greater London Authority, has written to Mr Fallon to remind him of an agreement that should the MOD no longer want the airfield ownership must be passed to the city of London.
“We want to make sure they don’t even think about selling it,” said Mr O’Connell.
Alan Morgan, chair of Kenley Airfield Friends Group which is applying for an £800,000 Heritage Lottery Fund to preserve the site, said he was not alarmed about the land’s future.
“We are alert but think it’s a low level risk at the moment,” he said.
Dumped rubbish Northwood Avenue, Purley and Oaks Road, Kenley 13/01/2015 09:27:00.......Posted by Steve Hollands
We continue to report dumped rubbish in the ward and have reported rubbish left on Northwood Avenue near the junction with Higher Drive. It's not the first time that someone has left rubbish there and we are keeping an eye on this section of the road.
As is customary real Christmas trees could be recycled and the site in Kenley was the usual one on the green by Oaks Road. I noticed that some trees had blown down the grass between Saturday morning 10th January and later in the day when trees were collected. I've reported the left over trees as well as some rubbish that was also left there.
Remembrance Service RAF Kenley Tribute at Kenley Aerodrome 14/11/2014 10:11:00.......Posted by Steve Hollands
Every year Kenley residents remember the brave fighter pilots, crew and ground staff who served and fought from Kenley Aerodrome during WW11. Since the installation of the memorial the crowds have grown that attend the 1.30pm service on Remembrance Sunday. Croydon’s Mayor and the Chairman of Tandridge District Council lead the service by laying wreaths on behalf of the two councils and we also attend laying wreaths as well other local representatives including local churches and the Corporation of London.
This year we commemorate the beginning of the Great War and no doubt residents minds will have been focused on relatives and the people that took part in that great conflict 100 years ago. The occassion also allows us to remember those that have served their country in other more modern wars including Korea, the 'Cold War', The Falklands Conflict, Iraq, Afghanistan and not forgetting the troubles in Northern Ireland.
“We shall remember them”
Kenley Councillor and GLA Member Steve O'Connell hails Coulsdon bypass success 14/11/2014 09:17:00.......Posted by Steve Hollands

Transport for London gives the green light to speed limit hike on Coulsdon bypass
Transport for London has said a planned hike to the speed limit on one of Croydon’s busiest roads will take place in the New Year.
The speed limit along most of Farthing Way, the A23 bypass around Coulsdon, has been 30mph since the road was built in 2007.
TfL announced last year it would consider raising the limit to 40mph - following complaints its current drop to 30mph at its northern end was unnecessary and had led to unfair speeding charges.
Steve O’Connell, GLA member for Croydon and Sutton, the Metropolitan Police and residents’ associations all backed the change in a consultation held earlier this year.
A statement on TfL’s website said: “We considered the comments and views expressed to us, which have helped inform our decision.
“We plan to go ahead with the extension of the 40mph limit 600 metres north to a point near to the footbridge across the A23.
Flood prevention works for Kenley and Purley 22/10/2014 16:10:00.......Posted by Steve Hollands
Since the extraordinary flooding earlier this year in Kenley and Purley councillors have kept the pressure on the Council to ensure that resources are found to prevent as much as possible a recurrence of the heavy floods. We are pleased to report that funding for nearly £850,000 of flood prevention measures in Kenley and Purley is set to be approved by Croydon Council.
The money will be spent on increasing the size of the underground section of the Caterham Bourne, increasing the capacity of the temporary reservoir at Bourne View, and upgrading the balancing pond at Purley Oaks. Other projects include carrying out landscaping at Bourne Park to form a dam, building a retaining wall to protect homes from flood water at Bourne Park Close, improving the flow of water past the school and cricket club and reinforcing the open ditch near to Tesco’s car park.
A lot of work has already been completed, most importantly changes to the pipe network between the water treatment plant and Purley. This will mean that in future there will be no need to bring in temporary pumps and hoses to transfer excess water past those homes most at risk of flooding.
The culverted section of the Bourne which runs under Dale Road is also in the process of being cleared out to stop water from backing up and reaching the surface.
More needs to be done in the longer term,in a much shorter time frame that is currently envisaged, but this is a good start.

Purley Hospital Petition - residents queue to sign to have the opening hours decison reversed. 15/10/2014 09:11:00.......Posted by Steve Hollands
Saturday 19th October saw Cllrs Steve Hollands, Jan Buttinger and Steve O’Connell along with Chris Philp (Conservative Parliamentary candidate for Croydon South) and the Purley Councillors out in Purley gathering signatures for the Purley War Memorial Hospital Petition.
The Conservative Party launched the petition to have the down grade of the hospital to a Minor Injury Unit reversed. Facilities such as the X Ray Facility is no longer available to local residents and the opening hours have been cut to 2pm – 8pm.
People were queuing up to sign our petition and this reflects the great concern to local residents that the facilities have been downgraded so quickly after millions of pounds was spent on the hospital.
Please do contact us with any issues or concerns you may have. We answer all our constituents' correspondence and value your comments. If you want your concern addressed by your local team, please follow the link above.
