Croydon Conservatives Delighted to see new Facility approved to Support sick Youngsters in a Brand New Children’s Unit at Croydon University Hospital
We are delighted to see that funding has been approved for The £5 million children’s unit which will include a critical care unit, surgical ward and short stay unit, as well as a children’s cancer unit. Work is expected to start in September with the aim of opening in 2022.
Croydon’s Conservative Councillors donated £30,000 to the Lily Pad Appeal supported by the Chartwell Cancer Trust which has joined forces with the NHS to raise £750,000 towards the new facility.
Cllr Yvette Hopley, Shadow Cabinet member for Health and Adult Social Care says, “The tragic reality is that child cancer has affected so many across Croydon – from the youngsters themselves to relatives, classmates and neighbours. Our borough is united in doing everything we can to make a tangible difference. It’s been a privilege to have the chance to support this charity and I am delighted that the project has been approved and look forward to seeing the new facility”.
Dr Edward Holloway, consultant paediatrician at Croydon Health Services NHS Trust said: “Croydon is home to one of the capital’s youngest populations and we’re committed to ensuring that we adapt to the needs of those that we care for at every age. “This project has been an ambition of ours for a number of years and we’re delighted to finally be moving forward with our new children’s unit.”
Trust chief executive Matthew Kershaw added: “Our paediatric teams look after over 51,900 children and young people each year, both in the hospital and in our community.
“As we see the number of young people in the borough increase, we need to ensure that our services reflect their needs and the growing complexities in their health conditions.”
Michael Douglas, head of The Chartwell Cancer Trust, said a new oncology unit will make a ‘life changing’ difference for the most vulnerable children in Croydon.
