A range of vaccination clinics are open in Croydon for residents to easily get a flu or Covid vaccination to boost their immunity and reduce the risk of getting seriously ill this winter.
People are being advised to take extra care with the co-circulation of flu, Covid-19 and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) - another virus which can cause cold like symptoms, as these viruses can be serious, and even fatal, especially for vulnerable people.
The best way to avoid catching and spreading flu and Covid-19 is by getting vaccinated ahead of winter. Residents can contact their GP surgery, get an appointment at a local pharmacy or book an appointment online. The details for walk-in clinics in Croydon for Covid-19 and flu vaccinations can be found here.
People can also find out the latest information about both vaccines, if they are eligible for a free jab and how to book on the NHS website.
Drop-in vaccine clinics have been set up in Croydon libraries for residents eligible for free jabs. This includes people aged 65 and over, pregnant women, frontline health and social care workers, carers and those living with someone with a weakened immune system.
The library drop-ins are on:
- Mondays - Weekly at Thornton Heath Library; 10am - 3.30pm
- Tuesdays - Fortnightly alternating between Purley and South Norwood Libraries; 10am - 3.30pm
- Wednesdays - Fortnightly Sanderstead Library; 10am – 3.30pm
- Thursdays - Weekly at New Addington Library; 10am – 3.30pm
- Fridays - Weekly at Norbury Library; 10am – 3.30pm
- Saturdays - Fortnightly alternating between Coulsdon and Selsdon Libraries
People can help prevent the spread of these viruses by covering their mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing and encouraging children to do so. Washing hands frequently or using hand gels and cleaning surfaces that are regularly used can also reduce the risk of infection.
There is more information about winter vaccinations and guidance on taking care of yourself and others during cold weather on the NHS website.
Rachel Flowers, Croydon’s director of public health, said: “We all want to keep as well as we can, especially when it’s cold outside. Getting the flu and Covid-19 vaccines is quick and easy, and it takes just a few minutes. Vaccinations offer the best chance of protection for you, and reduces your risk of becoming seriously ill if you have an underlying health condition. It also helps to keep safe those vulnerable people around you and helps ease the pressure on our health and social care services.”
