Part of the Council's fleet of waste bins are the so-called Big Belly Bins. These bins hold a great deal more than the standard bins because they include a compactor driven by solar power that crushes the waste deposited in the bin. In addition, an alert is sent to the Council when the bin nears being full.
However there are issues with these bins if they are not used properly. One issue is that people jam a large amount of waste into the hopper, as is shown in the left hand picture above. The bin is able to take this waste, but not if it is jammed in as shown. The example shown is on the green outside Selsdon Sainsbury's supermarket.
I passed by and removed a couple of items, the two coffee cups shown on the top. I was them able to close the hopper properly such that the waste fell into the compactor. I then was able to place the two coffee cups into the hopper and the bin is back in use.
Please be sensible and use these bins properly. Keeping our town tidy benefits us all.
