Residents will be able to keep active and achieve their fitness goals at a new gym set to open later this year at Monks Hill Sports Centre.
Work is set to begin to upgrade the community centre room and build a 30-station gym at the centre in Selsdon, South Croydon. The project has received £140,000 of investment from the council’s capital budget, funding ringfenced to make lasting improvements to the borough’s facilities.
The new facility will be open to the public, along with the other sports rooms and pitches at the dual-use centre in Farnborough Avenue, which is shared with The Quest Academy.
Managed by the council’s leisure provider GLL, the fitness suite will enhance the existing facilities at Monks Hill, which include an exercise studio, badminton courts, a floodlit full size synthetic turf pitch and outside basketball court.
Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon, said: “We’re doing all we can to help our residents look after their health, get active and improve their wellbeing. This includes working with partners to invest in our sports and exercise facilities and make sure they are affordable and accessible to all.
“This new gym at Monks Hill Sports Centre will be a great addition to the centre and one that I’m sure residents of all ages will enjoy using.”
David Hughes, GLL’s Partnership Manager for Croydon, said: “It’s fantastic to receive the news that Monks Hill Sports Centre will benefit from significant investment for a new gym to enhance the health and fitness offer for local residents.
“GLL is a charitable social enterprise that sees itself very much at the heart of local community health and wellbeing and we know the importance our customers place on their local leisure facilities.”
