There was a large and sombre gathering at the Town Hall flagstaff yesterday to mark the first anniversary of Russia's brutal invasion of Ukraine.
We heard speeches from Mayors Perry & Flemming, and also a very moving account of one family's story of fleeing the country, and how they were being looked after here. Finally we heard from a UK family which is providing accommodation for a Ukrainian family. Like many other countries, the UK and its citizens was generous is offering initial support to refugees, but the longer this war has gone on, the more difficult it has become to provide long-term accommodation, particularly when set against the many other competing demands for housing. Sadly there are no easy solutions.
