Purley residents who are interested in the evolution of motor vehicles get a treat every year when the Veteran Car rally passes through Purley on the first Sunday in November.
The annual run from London to Brighton started in 1896 and has continued more of less every year ever since. To be a true veteran, the vehicle must have three or four wheels and have been built in 1904 or earlier.
This year about 400 vehicles took part in conditions that were extremely challenging for the elderly vehicles and their drivers and passengers, especially as most vehicles were completely open to the elements. The heavens opened just as many made their hesitant way through the Purley gyratory, so it was truly heroic to endure those conditions for the 50 mile run to Brighton.
