Sanderstead residents’ concerns about the homeless village in Croydon subway

 

A number of residents have contacted me to raise their concerns about the number of homeless people currently living in the subway which runs under Wellesley Road from the Whitgift Centre. This must be so difficult for the people concerned and it is terribly sad that people are having to sleep rough like this in Croydon.

I raised an enquiry about this situation with the Council last week and I have received the below response:

Good morning Councillor

I can confirm that this encampment is known to the council, and is subject to a multi- agency meeting which is to take place in the next few weeks.

There are a number of reasons as to why these individuals have not been moved on, so it will take a while before this is resolved.

I certainly hope that suitable accommodation can soon be found and the subway refreshed for ease of Town Centre access.
