Overnight there was unusually heavy rainfall in the local area. As a result some of the drains are struggling to cope with the volume of water and so there are some roads that are temporarily impassable.
Please do not attempt to drive through these waterlogged roads unless you are confident your vehicle can clear it. If you aren’t sure, do not take the risk and try to find an alternative route. If relying on public transport, do check their websites for the latest information.
Our hope is that the local sewers will drain the excess water over time, but as a precaution we have lodged enquiries with both Thames Water and Croydon Council to make sure they are working around the clock to get our roads back to normal as swiftly as possible.
I’ll update you all as soon as we have more concrete information. Do let me know if there are any particular roads that the authorities should focus on.
Please take extra care on the roads today.
UPDATE AT 10:00
London and the South East were issues an Amber weather warning last night with some very heavy rain overnight, with 20-30 mm of rain possible in an hour and locally 60 mm in 2-3 hours.
Croydon's highways contractor were on standby in preparations, they did receive two calls via the out of hour’s service regarding localised flooding and both were dealt with. As with all prolonged periods of heavy/torrential rain it is not uncommon for both the surface and or foul water systems to become temporarily overwhelmed, once the rain eases the systems are able to recover very quickly.
Today the Council has resources available to attend following any flooding reports received, these staff will also be checking Croydon's known flood areas to ensure there are no issues.
The weather forecast for today is for a bright but fresher day with some sunshine so we are not expecting any further rain.
If you are concerned please visit the Council’s website https://www.croydon.gov.uk/environment/flood-and-water-management which provides useful information on tackling flooding on private property and or how to report flooding incidents.
