It was confirmed this week that building is to begin on a £14.7m refurbishment to Croydon University Hospital’s Child Cancer Unit. The refurbishment will increase the size of the unit by half, creating 22 intensive care and high dependency beds to care for the most seriously ill and injured.
The 18-month major project will provide state-of-the-art facilities and more privacy and dignity for patients receiving life-dependent care, with en-suite facilities, quiet rooms and waiting areas to support families in their local hospital at some of the most difficult times in their lives.
Croydon’s Conservative Councillors pooled together a donation of £30,000 to donate to the “Lily Pad Appeal”, which will help fund a new play area that will provide some much-needed moments of joy to young patients.
Cllr. Jason Perry, Leader of the Croydon Conservatives, said:
“Child Cancer has affected so many people across the Borough – including the children themselves but also their families and friends. I’m so pleased to see that this refurbishment has been approved by the Government, and it has been a real honour to be able to make a difference ourselves by making this donation. We will do all we can to support this facility going forwards.”
With the funding for the refurbishment having been approved by the Government, building is expected to begin in the Autumn with the new facility opening in 2023 - we can't wait to see this world-class unit that will drastically improve the patient experience for vulnerable children.
