This morning the Croydon Conservatives proudly attended the Flag Raising Ceremony outside Croydon Townhall, for our towns new Progress LGBT+ Flag.
We were delighted to donate towards the needed funds, as a part of a fundraiser to purchase this new flag for our town!
June is LGBT+ Pride Month, which is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the LGBT+ community, and what they bring to our community in Croydon. Croydon is a truly diverse town; this new flag helps show our solidarity with the LGBT+ community. There is no better symbol of the LGBT+ movement than the Pride flag, it is a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, pride and the social movements. The colours of the flag reflects the diversity of the LGBT+ community as a whole.
The Pride Flag itself is ever changing, and represents the creativity, and the individual needs of the LGBT+ community, and the need to evolve to new and different versions of the flag over the years.
Designer and LGBT+ activist, Daniel Quasar, designed this new Progress Flag, with emphasis on inclusion and progression, by incorporating elements of the original six-colour pride flag. The colour brown represents marginalised people of colour, the colour black for those living with AIDS, those no longer living, and the stigma surrounding them; and the trans pride flag, which is light blue, light pink and white. The arrow pointing to the right represents forward movement progression, but being along the left edge of the flag shows that further progress is still required.
As a Gay Conservative Councillor, the new Progress LGBT+ Flag represents the true inclusivity our borough has, and I am immensely proud the Croydon Conservatives were able to help support this important milestone, symbol of solidarity and inclusivity in Croydon!
