After a lull in the first part of 2021, developers seem to have got going again recently, and a new application has just been lodged for yet more flats, 67 this time spread over four * 6-storey blocks fronting onto Banstead Road, just West of the approved Baptist Church development - ref 21/02832/FUL.
The Croydon local plan was forced through the Council in December 2018, and it positively encouraged developers to demolish family homes and replace them with increasingly large blocks of flats. There have been applications for nearly 1000 flats to be built within 200m of Purley Cross, and most of these have already been approved.
Unfortunately, scarcely a penny is being spent on infrastructure such as surgeries and schools where it is so badly needed; the Council claims that it cannot afford even to re-open the Purley leisure centre, yet it manages to find about £1M to move a library in the Labour South Norwood ward...
