This evening I had a meeting with the very active residents group, the Croydon Communities Consortium. The topic of the meeting was anything related to Croydon's roads, from road safety for Cyclists, to the very controversial Low Traffic Neighbourhoods which have been "temporarily" installed across the borough by the Labour Council.
It was great to see that there is clearly so much passion in our borough, the meeting has a very fair and balanced debate, with multiple different and valid views on the same topics of discussion.
I was very disappointed however, that the Cabinet Lead for Sustainable Croydon, Cllr Mohammed Ali, did not give his apologies, or submit an update report to the group. In June 2019, Croydon Council declared a climate emergency, the cabinet member not bothering to attend these sort of community lead meetings does not bode well.
The Croydon Climate n Crises Commission report which will be going to cabinet in June, stated that it was imperative for community groups such as these to be encouraged, with proactive engagement from the Council, it is a shame that Cllr Mohammed Ali does not follow the advice from the report he will be endorsing!
I have instead taken a number of questions, and some very important casework which were raised in the meeting, and I have also promised a follow up meeting in the near future.
It is my role as a local Councillor in Croydon, and a Shadow Cabinet Member for Sustainable Croydon, to represent the residents of Croydon, and it the very least I can do with attending such meetings, it is a shame Cllr Mohammed Ali does not take the same approach.
