Residents have contacted me about the traffic 'chaos' currently being experienced in and around Coulsdon town centre.
This is being caused by:
- A 3-way traffic light system at the T junction of Brighton Road and Stoats Nest Road - this is causing tailbacks on Brighton Road both ways,
- A 3-way traffic light system between the Coulsdon town Brighton Road and The Avenue - this is causing issues since the traffic lights are not in any way setup to work with the main lights on Brighton Road/Farthing Way (A23).
- And a 2-way traffic light system on Woodcote Grove Road - this is causing tailbacks on either side of that all the way back to the main roundabout (Marlpit Lane/Brighton Rd/Cane Hill Park entrance).
I've made enquiries about why all three works are taking place at the same time.
The signals on the A23 Brighton Road are there due to emergency works run by TfL, not by Croydon Council. As they are an emergency, they need to take place as soon as possible. Ordinarily if it had been planned works then it would have been carried out at night when demand on the road network is much lower.
The other contractors had scheduled in their works, and on their own they wouldn't have caused the congestion that local residents are now experiencing.
Council Officers have promised to investigate the signal timings to try to ensure traffic is flowing as best as possible while the works are taking place.
Hopefully the signal syncing will make a difference, I've asked to be kept updated on progress.
