Following an opening ceremony last month, the new bike hub at Kenley station is now open!
Helped by a cycle parking grant from Transport for London, Southern Railway funded the project and have worked with Croydon Borough Council to design and build the facility.
The hub was originally a council initiative, proposed through its ‘Connecting Kenley’ programme, a response to local support for a coordinated approach to transport planning. Recognising the importance of the station for local commuters and the need to improve facilities to encourage cycle use, the council approached Southern in March last year to explore how those improvements could be achieved. Southern’s financial contribution was from its annual programme of ‘Small Station Improvements’, which this year has completed projects at 20 stations including improved wheelchair access, new customer information screens and better lighting.
Security is taken seriously and access to the hub is via a fob available at the ticket office. At present these fobs are free of charge. Bikes are protected by the fob entry system and CCTV, though cyclists are advised to use locks on their machines for maximum security. The hub also houses a repair stand and pump for tyres.
Kenley Councillors Gayle and Ola were delighted to attend the opening ceremony to cut the ribbon and welcome project partners to Kenley. We were also pleased to see representatives from KENDRA, the Residents Association at the opening. We wanted to thank everyone involved in the project in approving, designing, building and co-ordinating this attractive addition to Kenley Station, All you need now is a stong pair of thighs to get you up the Kenley hills!
