On Tuesday, I attended a flag-raising ceremony at the Town Hall to celebrate the arrival of the ship HMT Empire Windrush at Tilbury docks in 1948. We heard some moving speeches from families who were descended from the original immigrants, noting that so many of them had taken up jobs in NHS, public transport and other key industries.
We were also treated to an enactment of the story of one of the original immigrants, which was beautifully portrayed by two actors in authentic costumes. It was a pleasure to hear their story.
