Wild flowers and hundreds of seeds have been planted in the designated garden at Sanderstead Library.
This project was started with an initiative by a former library staff member and the Brilliant Butterflies partnership which finished in August 2020. Local residents and Sanderstead Residents' Association have picked up the initiative and today planted new plants. This area, the grass and wild flower vegetation should not now be cut until the end of the flowering season in July 2022, and then again in September.
A notice describing the different species and instructions for the Council's grounds maintenance contractors not to cut the area within the ropes will be posted next to the meadow.
The next project is build a simple composting area made out of chicken wire and wooden stakes. This is all part of a larger initiative to improve the library grounds which have been neglected for some time. There are all sorts of small initiatives we would like to introduce to help make the experience for visitors at the library a better one such as the possible introduction of a coffee machine and the return of daily newspapers. Work is also required to ensure essential maintenance is undertaken by the council to repair the roof, guttering and electrics and hopefully introduce disabled access and toilets along with increased opening hours - hopefully on a Saturday. All of which needs discussion and negotiationi with the council.
The Sanderstead Residents' Association hope to improve the grounds and support library services through a "Friends of Sanderstead Library Group", which they hope will soon be formulated.
