Kenley has a parade of busy shops, restaurants, a pharmacy, GP surgery, take-aways and a pub, but very little parking for people wanting to utilise these amenities. Parking around the shops can be very stressed and residents and visitors alike often have to circle around several times hoping to chance upon a vacant parking spot. This not only exacerbates congestion but also contributes to increased air pollution.
However, Kenley station does have a car park, which is rather under-utilised due to having just one tariff for full-day parking.
Earlier this year, recognising the need for a more accessible parking solution working together with our local Residents Association KENDRA, I initiated discussions with Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR). The goal was to explore the possibility of introducing flexible parking rates that would allow people to park for shorter durations, making it easier for them to visit the nearby shops and businesses.
While GTR emphasised the primary role of the car park in serving railway users, they were receptive to the idea of devising a solution that could benefit both Kenley residents and their revenue streams.
I am pleased to share that GTR has taken a proactive step in addressing this concern. They have confirmed the introduction of a diversified tariff structure at Kenley Station, moving beyond the traditional full-day rate of £5.70.
The new tariff structure is as follows:
- 1 hour: £1.00
- 2 hours: £2.00
- 4 hours: £4.00
This development not only provides residents and visitors with more flexibility but also stands to bolster the vitality of our local businesses by facilitating easier access to their establishments. For more information, see: https://www.apcoa.co.uk/southern/
I would like to thank GTR for engaging with me on this issue and hope that the change will be beneficial to residents and businesses.
