Short term forecast
This afternoon will see more patchy cloud developing It will be largely dry with sunny spells, but the odd shower cannot be ruled out. A gentle southerly breeze. Tonight, is expected to be clear and dry. However, clouds and winds increase from the west toward dawn. Another chilly night. Tomorrow will be cloudy and windy with spells of rain pushing in for late morning / early afternoon, the rain could briefly be wintry at the start and may fall initially onto frozen ground leading to icy surfaces, chiefly the higher parts of the borough to the south and east. There remains some uncertainty around timings so the duty officer will continue to monitor.
Road conditions:
Road surface temperatures will fall sharply to significantly below zero tonight, as the weather front moves across the region this will see RSTs improve.
2-to-5-day forecast
Monday will be largely cloudy with a few spots of rain in places through the morning, turning drier later in the afternoon. Windy, but considerably milder. Tuesday will be a largely cloudy and wet day with spells of rain feeding in from the south-west, falling heavy at times. Wednesday looks to see a mixture of variable cloud, sunny spells, and a few showers at times.
6-to-10-day forecast
A new band of extensive rain will push in from the south on Thursday, this continuing into much of Friday. Temperatures will recover and will get much milder than of late throughout this period.
Turning to the gritting operations
Road gritting
Due to RSTs dropping below freezing late afternoon the gritters are currently treat both primary and secondary rounds this afternoon, all rounds will be treated by 200hrs hours, and the crews will then stand down. Due to the uncertainty for tomorrow and the potential of rain falling on freezing roads chiefly across the higher parts of the borough, Old Coulsdon, Kenley, Selsdon, and Addington the duty officer is arranging for 4No gritters to treat these parts and be readily available as the weather front come across the borough.
Footways
There are no footway treatments planned tomorrow.
The Council will continue to monitor the forecast and adjust gritting operations, as necessary.
