I recently noticed that many of the bins on Purley High Street - all those that are not the larger 'Big-Belly' bins - were covered by a green bag, preventing their use. Today I have been advised that the bags cannot just be removed because,
"The litter bins currently covered in Green bags are covered to prevent use due to the fact these were installed some time ago and assumed to be part of a previous District Centre project. The bin liners are missing and all attempts have been made to trace the supplier to source replacement liners to no avail, and so are therefore unfit for use.
Arrangements have been made hopefully for next week to have the bins removed, these will be returned to our depot where it is intended to see if these bins can be recycled for re use in the future if at all possible if a fabricated liners can be found or financially viable to be suitably made."
The obvious question is when these bins will be replaced. Whilst an assessment will take place, now that I have asked, the Council's motivation for installing the 'Big-Belly' bins is that they can accommodate larger volumes and communicate with the contractors when they need emptying, Therefore it is expected that less of these larger bins are needed.
I'm not sure that I'm convinced that fewer bins will work, however efficient they are. Fewer bins only work if everyone will walk that extra distance to dispose of litter - and we know that is not always the case. Do report litter via the 'Love Clean Streets' App so that the Council is aware of how much litter is not making into the bins on the High Street.
