One of the familiar features of the Purley gyratory is the Rotary clock which was first installed over 50 years ago. Sadly the Rotary Club of Purley has decided to dissolve because of sharply declining membership, so among many other closure issues, they had to determine the future of the clock.
I'm secretary of this club, and I wanted to ensure that the clock would be maintained for posterity; The Purley Business Improvement District (BID) is an association of all the businesses in the town centre and I'm delighted that the BID kindly agreed to look after it into the future.
The club paid for a complete overhaul, and the clock is now fully functional and radio-controlled, which should ensure its accuracy and longevity. The photo shows Cllr Simon Brew, Simon Cripps & Catherine Garrad of the BID, and Quentin Taylor, who is a Rotary member; many years ago, Quentin used to work at the estate agent which became Bairstow Eves and he looked after the clock from his office, so it was very fitting that he should be there at its handover to the BID.
I'm very grateful to the BID for agreeing to take this on, and I'll now look forward to checking the time every time I pass it :-)
