A number of residents contacted me about the overflowing bins in Sanderstead Recreation Ground. My ward colleague Lynne Hale and I along with the Friends of the Park decided to try to clear up the litter from around the bins blowing into the park. Mandy Ashton from Priscillas in the cafe works hard to keep the area neat and tidy and often clears up the rubbish but doesn't have time to clear the whole park. She would be happy to empty the full bins if she had cages to put the litter in during the summer months when the park is very busy. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that the council is willing to help her. Rather than see the park in a terrible state we decided to spend some hours cleaning it up ourselves. Residents were so grateful for our efforts. Sadly the council's dire financial state of affairs means the service has been scaled back dramatically causing a real issue in terms of council officers being able to attend on a regular basis to pick up the litter and empty the bins. Such a shame.
