Croydon Council today held a moving ceremony for Holocaust Memorial Day.
Livestreamed on YouTube, it featured contributions from local students and community leaders - all of which were thought-provoking and relevant to the sombre purpose of the event.
Whilst it takes place to commemorate the day Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated, it calls on us to remember all the victims of genocide.
That's why it was particularly moving to hear the speech given by Sok Din from Cambodia. He survived the killing fields of the Khmer Rouge where more than a million people were tragically murdered. His living testimony of the evil that can be done by our fellow man is a stark reminder of how fragile our democratic society is, and how we must all remain vigilant against the forces of oppression, manipulation and tyranny. Do please try to make the time to watch it.
Lasting just one hour, the ceremony can still be found online on the Council's YouTube channel.
