I think developers try to squeeze lots of planning application in across the Christmas period, hoping that people won't notice in the middle of the festive season! But it's not much festive cheer for local residents.
A planning applications has just been lodged to demolish 114 Downlands Road (just opposite St Swithuns church) and replace it with, of course a block of flats. The site is quite small, so they haven't been able to squeeze in more than eight flats rather than the usual nine, and there are only four parking spaces to go with them. This inevitably means that there will be lots of overspill car parking in the immediate area which is already saturated with several new developments within 100 m.
Design is obviously a matter of personal taste, but I can't say I'm attracted to what is proposed, particularly when it's compared with all the other detached 4 bed family home in the immediate area. And then there's the issue of where is the new infrastructure for all the hundreds of new flats currently being built in Purley, even as the Purley Pool remains closed?
