Nicola Wilding a Sanderstead Amputee will be part of the five person Dover Darlings relay team, to attempt to swim the English Channel. Weather permitting it’ll be this Sunday meeting at 23:00, although the time could change as they are swimming through the night.
The pilots, Fred & Harry of the Masterpiece will be looking after them as they attempt the crossing. They set sail from Folkestone in Kent and you will be able to track their progress via the Channel Swimming Association website. Nicola posted these comments on Nextdoor:
“It’s been unseasonably cold but they are hoping they have got good enough practice in to cope. The crossing is 21 miles from England to France and can take from 14 -20 hours, but it all depends on tides, weather, swimmers, and gargantuan boats!”
I’m not sure how many female, 1 armed swimmers have attempted the crossing, but I’ll say I’m the 1st from Sanderstead aged 44. I’m doing this second part to raise funds for a bionic hand controlled by thought. The fund currently stands at just over £23k and if I get to £30k then that’s the hand. #nickyneedsahand!
Please share the story and if you have any contacts in the media who may be interested then please get them to contact me. I hope the story reaches as many people as possible, to inspire and lift the spirits. Wish us luck, and please have a word with the weather gods for favourable weather, tides and no jellyfish!"
Good Luck.
