Cleaner streets, more regular waste collections, and enhanced service monitoring will be part of Croydon’s new and improved waste and recycling contract. This forms part of Conservative Mayor Jason Perry's plan to restore pride in our Borough.
Residents have played a key role in shaping the contract, with their feedback—such as maintaining regular waste collections and improving street cleaning—directly influencing its design.
The new eight-year contract, set to commence on 1st April 2025, will benefit both the council and the community. The supplier will be revealed following the final decision, in line with commercial sensitivities. The contract will cover a range of services, including waste and recycling collections, street cleaning, winter maintenance of footpaths, and upkeep of the waste vehicle fleet.
Key features of the contract include maintaining alternate weekly household waste and recycling collections, with weekly food waste collections remaining unchanged. Flats above shops will now receive two waste collections per week, and there will be a new minimum weekly food waste collection from all council housing estates.
Improvements include better coordination of bin emptying, ensuring no bin bags are left out overnight, targeted street cleaning, and the introduction of a graffiti removal service, as part of Executive Mayor Jason Perry’s commitment to restoring pride in Croydon.
A more robust contract management approach will allow council officers to work closely with the service provider, enabling them to be fully integrated into the community areas they monitor.
Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon, said:
“I have listened to residents’ concerns about the borough’s current contract and feel positive that what we are proposing for the future is a better deal for Croydon.
“As part of my business plan, I committed to making our streets and open spaces cleaner, so that Croydon is a place residents and businesses can feel proud to call home. I believe this contract is a big milestone to achieving that commitment.
“I am also committed to making sure that this contract is well managed and if residents experience problems, we will be able to swiftly resolve them, which will be a massive improvement on the current arrangements.”
