I attended an interesting training session, delivered by the planning department, on Monday.
It was important to hear how housing targets are created, who creates them, and what they are assessed on. It is also vital to note that these targets are strict - national law dictates that failure to meet a certain threshold of new homes means that a Council’s ability to reject developments is essentially taken away, and developers really are given ‘free rein’ to build what they like.
The meeting shows that it is important for the Council to work with developers, to ensure that enough homes are built - and it is also vital for these developments to be suitable and aesthetically pleasing.
