I am really pleased that the Friends of Croham Hurst Woods have funded new signage for SSSI Croham Hurst Woods through the generosity and support of our members.
The old signage was in a poor state of repair with lettering missing and often in the wrong place to inform walkers and cyclists. While this project was not as exciting as some of our former projects like the recreation of the meadow shown on old maps or the restoration of the historic view from the top of the Hurst or the removal of invasive holly it was very important.
During the lockdowns a high number of cyclists used the Hurst and the fragile surface of the woods suffered damage. Cycling is permitted on one path only in the woods and that is the bridleway the path that runs alongside the golf course Unfortunately the old signage was unclear and unhelpful and this led to unpleasant confrontations between some residents and cyclists. I received a high number of complaints about this single issue during the lockdowns. Croham Hurst woods is one of the jewels in Croydons crown and we want everyone to enjoy its beauty safely.
This project has taken almost two years because of Covid and I would like to thank Council officers for their help in what has been a hugely difficult time. The Council owns Croham Hurst Woods and is responsible for its management but due to the extreme financial difficulties of the Council could not fund new signage. The Friends of Croham Hurst Woods were able to step in so everyone can enjoy nature and the peace and beauty it offers to all residents. We are so lucky to have Croham Hurst woods on our doorstep.
