Talked to market traders who had been moved from Surrey Street to North End for the duration of the development of Surrey Street. They are happy with the amount of business they are getting but there are a few issues with the move.
Firstly, people go to Surrey Street and then can't work out where the stalls have gone. After a few days the Council finally put up some signs but they are not clear and pedestrians are missing them. Today I met the Council's market manager and asked her to work on better signage. Whilst I was talking to her in Surrey Street three people asked us where the market had gone!
Secondly, the market traders can only set up their stalls from 6-9am in the morning. They want access earlier than that as it takes a while to set up when the equipment is stored so far away in Surrey Street. They also can't take down their stalls earlier than 6pm which is a lot later than they would usually stay open.
Thirdly, some market traders are used to bringing their stall and produce up to Surrey Street from the storage units a few metres away. Those without cares/vans now have to wheel therir barrows all the way to the other end of North End. The Council has provided no assistance with this. Replenishing stock is equally difficult.
Finally, I met another resident today who lives on Surrey Street and feels there has been little or no communication about the move. She felt things would have run more smoothly if communication had been better.
