A guided walk of discovery
01/03/2017 21:09:00......Posted by Sara Bashford

The Friends of Selsdon Wood host various walks and the first one this year is on Saturday 4th March at 2pm, meeting in the Selsdon Wood car park off Old Farleigh Road.

The walk is a ‘Family Woodland Walk’ with Meike Weiser and is for families with children aged 5+. All the walks organised by the FOSW are slow and easy – a meander rather than a hike!

Thames Water works in Kersey Drive
20/03/2017 16:38:00.......Posted by Sara Bashford

Thames Water will be renewing a ‘pressure release valve’ in Kersey Drive at its junction with Kingwood Way. Works will take place from 27/03/17 to 05/04/17. To facilitate these works multi-way signals will be used. Pedestrians will be maintained on existing footway.

Hopefully they will be finished on time and cause the minimum of disruption.

Wet paint - a hazardous material!
16/03/2017 15:57:00.......Posted by Sara Bashford

Empty paint tins or those containing dried paint can be taken to the Household Reuse and Recycling Centres. However I was surprised to learn that wet paint is now classed as hazardous waste and the recycling site licenses in Croydon do not currently permit this.  Residents can book a free paint collection from their home via the City of London, details of which can be found here:

If you use this service I would be interested to know how efficient it was.

On Sunday 2nd April there will be a spring walk setting out from Selsdon Wood car park at 2pm. It is being led by the Friends of Selsdon Wood and will be a ramble thorugh the woods looking at the extensive flora and forna, as well as getting some gentle exercise.

More road works...........
15/03/2017 16:37:00.......Posted by Sara Bashford

We have received the following notification fromthe Council:-

"We are writing to inform you that Croydon’s Highways team together with its principal contractor Kier, will shortly be commencing carriageway resurfacing works on the above road. The works are scheduled  to be implemented 29th  March 2017 -1st April 2017.  Due to the locations and nature of these works it is inevitable that some disruption will occur between 21:30hrs-05:30hrs when the works are being carried out. For this reason it is recommended that where possible you use alternative routes, or allow extra time to complete your journey. Additionally to enable the works to be completed with the least inconvenient to the residents, appropriate traffic management plan will be in place.

Pedestrian access will not be affected whilst the works are taking place.

Croydon’s Highways team wishes to apologise in advance and welcomes your co-operation to ensure the work is executed safely and efficiently. Every effort will be made to minimise the inconvenience that may be caused during the works. In view of these works, we will notify residents and businesses in the vicinity with a letter drop notification"

Let's hope the disruption is kept to a minimum, especailly for those who live in the vicinity.

Tram works - 8th to 18th April
28/02/2017 19:43:00.......Posted by Sara Bashford

Between 8th and 18th April work will be undertaken on the tram network between East Croydon and Reeves Corner. Therefore, trams from New Addington, Elmers End and Beckenham will terminate at East Croydon and those coming from the Wimbledon side will terminate at Reeves Corner.

I hope this doesn’t cause too much disruption.

Arkwright Road / Church Way urgent road works
28/02/2017 14:05:00.......Posted by Sara Bashford

We have just recieved the following about urgent road works:-

SGN have several gas escapes on a gas main in the carriageway in Arkwright road at its junction with Church Way. To facilitate these works three-way signals have been installed at this junction. These works are anticipated to be completed on 7th March, however due to the nature of emergency works this may change.

Ihope this does not cause too much inconvenience.

Council Tax up by 4.99%
28/02/2017 09:59:00.......Posted by Sara Bashford

Last night the Labour Council agreed a 4.99% increase to your Council Tax and then went to the pub to celebrate.

I sat through a meeting where the Leader of the Council, his Cabinet and backbenchers all spoke in favour of the rise and blamed it on the Government, the previous Conservative administration and any other individual or organisation they could. What they didn’t do was take any responsibility for their decisions or choices. Whilst I accept that outside factors do impact on the Council’s budget the fact they have a £11M overspend in one department and it is getting worse shows how they can’t manage the boroughs finances. What they can do is give Boxpark a £3M loan, spend over £1M refurbishing an old library which will be handed over to another organisation to run, when three years ago it would have cost the tax payer nothing. They have put money into a festival and a bike race and then moan they are hard done by. It is all about priorities, choices and responsibility. I will leave you to make you own minds up about what this Labour administration’s are.

New trees - will Selsdon and Ballards get any?
24/02/2017 07:48:00.......Posted by Sara Bashford

The Council have announced that they have received £13,000 from the Mayor of London to plant about 150 trees. My first reaction was that this is excellent news as the Council have asked for residents to let them know if they would like one in their road by emailing

However, as I read further down the announcement, the Cabinet Member has said that he wants the majority of these trees to be planted in the north of the Borough. His quote is “the north of Croydon has been highlighted as an area that needs particular attention”

I realise this doesn’t preclude the south and in particular Selsdon and Ballards, but I don’t feel hopeful we will see our fair share. If you have any locations you would like a new street tree planted, please send a request to the email above and if possible copy me in so I can monitor if any requests from our area are approved.

Yet more disruption - Coombe Lane
14/02/2017 12:51:00.......Posted by Sara Bashford

We have just been made aware that the gas board have informed the Council they need to install 2 way lights in Coombe Lane, 100 meters north of the Royal Russell School , in order to effect a repair on a leaking gas main. It is expected the works will take 3 days to complete.

We seem to be beset with emergencies that involve digging the road up in Selsdon and Ballards and very much hope this is the last of many disputions.

Even more dispution - Addington Road / Ashen Vale
08/02/2017 15:44:00.......Posted by Sara Bashford

We have been told that from the 13th to the 19th February due to a collapse sewer in Addington Road near its junction with Ashen Vale (Selsdon Park Road end) Thames Water will install two-way signals. These signals will be manually controlled during peak times and pedestrians will be albe to use the existing footway.

These works will be carried out ahead of Croydon’s carriageway resurfacing works in Addington Road which we have previously posted detials of.

Please note; these works will be delayed if the emergency UKPN works at the old Farleigh Road junction overrun - see last post.
