Another application for house on public footpath 144 by West Hill
31/12/2015 10:07:00......Posted by Maria Gatland

Yet another planning application has come forward to build a house on the old tennis courts of 11 West Hill. There has been a long history here of trying to develop on these tennis courts but nothing has been permitted so far. The problem is of course it is right on top of a heavily used public footpath both by commuters who use the footpaths to get to Sanderstead Station and the bus stops on Mayfield rd as well children and parents on their way to Ridgeway school. Cars using this footpath present a danger to pedestrians, it is after all a public footpath!  To get around this serious problem the application is presented as a "zero parking" house". In my view that is totally unrealistic. I understand this is expected to come forward with a recommendation for approval from planning officers. As I have objected as ward councillor and referred to Planning Committee the decision will be taken by the committee of councillors and not planning officers. As yet I have not had a committee date but hope residents will attend the meeting. If you wish to view the application go to the online planning register and put in application no 15/05061/P

Selsdon Rd Fly Tip Reported
24/09/2017 13:48:00.......Posted by Maria Gatland

A fly tip of food stuffed into a litter bin near the junction of Rockhampton Rd has just been reported

Bagged up last week by the Council the bags were not collected and animals have scattered food and leaves all over the grassed area and pavement

It needs to be cleared properly as soon as possible

More Local Heritage Lost
24/09/2017 13:25:00.......Posted by Maria Gatland

Last week at Planning Committee the current Labour Administration of the Council voted to demolish 236 Selsdon Rd and replace with a three storey block of flats with just 4 parking spaces. You may have noticed this pretty cottage at the junction of Selsdon and Carlton rds it was built probably around the 1840s by Frederic Potter the owner of the brick fields that covered this area. In the 1860s the house and acres of the brick fields was sold to the Railway for the construction of the Oxted line. It then became the stationmasters house for the station opposite now closed. A house that stood for so much of our local and social history will now be demolished. I was at Planning Committee to object and speak against this proposal but all six Labour members of the committee voted to demolish the building and the four Conservative members voted against. There will be new housing but I had hoped the cottage could have been retained within the scheme. Public art in the form of a wall shaped like a train will be built but that in no way compensates for the loss of this cottage and so much of the local and social history of the area.

Help for South Croydon Allotments from Croham Ward Budget
23/08/2017 11:47:00.......Posted by Maria Gatland

We were so pleased to hear of the success of the South Croydon Allotments Open Day. We know how hard the committee worked to make it such an interesting day. We were delighted to play our part by funding new notices, bulbs and wild flower seeds and especially a new toilet door that was much needed!  These allotments are so important for lots of local residents helping mental and physical health and a meeting place to chat and have a cup of tea. We are looking forward to seeing the wild flowers and bulbs come up next year.

Fly Tipping, Graffiti under Croham Rd Railway Bridge
23/08/2017 11:05:00.......Posted by Maria Gatland

Many local residents walk under this bridge from Croydon or from South Croydon Station to work. It is often an unpleasant experience dark and dirty and feels unsafe on both sides but particularly on the Croham Ward side opposite the steps to South Croydon. I have reported again fly tipping on the high ledge under the bridge and graffiti even on the lights as I noticed yesterday evening. I have reported to Croydon Council and asked they discuss with Network Rail more preventative measures to deter fly tipping and the rest of this anti social behaviour

Residents in South Croydon raise concerns about grass cutting
23/08/2017 10:54:00.......Posted by Maria Gatland

Residents have raised concerns about the length of the grass verges in so many roads in south Croydon. Grass has not been cut or only partly cut in Rockhampton and Selsdon Rds Hurst Way

Hurst View Rd West Hill and many other roads. I have asked again when it will be cut and was told by the Council this week. Let's wait and see. What a poor service residents have received this year!

More Fly Tipping Croham Manor road
14/07/2017 11:02:00.......Posted by Maria Gatland

Just reported another fly tip on Croham Manor Rd by Croham Hurst Woods. No houses on this side of the road so fly tippers feel free just to open their car door and dump on the pavement or in Croham Hurst Woods. It is becoming more frequent again and needs monitoring by Croydon Council

Local Concerns reported
02/07/2017 18:29:00.......Posted by Maria Gatland

Residents have contacted me over the last few weeks about a number of local concerns.

Grass cutting or rather grass not been cut topped the list. In particular some verges being cut and some close by being left to grow even higher.

Fly tips on the edge of Croham Hurst Woods. How anyone can dump carpets and other rubbish in this beautiful place beggars belief.

Some years ago graffiti seemed to be one the wane but in the last year it is noticeable in many parts of the ward. I have reported graffiti under the railway bridges at the bottom of Sussex rd.

All these problems have been sorted out.

However there is an ongoing problem under the Railway bridge on Croham Rd near the mini roundabout. The ledge is filled with fly tipping. The other side of the road has been boarded up to prevent fly tipping but despite numerous requests Network Rail have not done the same here or dealt with the overhanging brambles. I will ask the Council to contact Network Rail again. It is an unpleasant place for residents to walk under, an attempted mugging was reported there to Croham SNT

Now you see them, now you don't!
07/04/2017 13:29:00.......Posted by Maria Gatland

Residents in Chelsham rd South Croydon were first delighted to see Croydon Council turn up in their road to plant three trees. Soon the their delight turned to bemusement as the trees were planted and then soon after dug up and taken away.! One resident thought when he came home that he had imagined the whole thing! It appears that the wrong species were planted and had to be removed. I have checked with the Council and the residents will get their new trees in a couple of weeks. Let's hope the right species this time.

Emergency Road Closure Causes Problems for Residents
02/04/2017 20:01:00.......Posted by Maria Gatland

Last Week a collapsed sewer caused an emergency closure of the part of Selsdon Rd junction Haling road. Thames Water were on site to deal with the repairs. Right from the start residents reported chaos and disruption. Diverting traffic down Sussex rd a narrow heavily parked bus route caused major problems. Parents and children attending the two schools the Harris Primary and St Peters Primary reported dangerous traffic conditions. From the start the ward councillors worked with the Council to provide better road signage and to ensure the works are finished as soon as possible. The latest advice we have had from the Council is that hopefully works will be finished early next week.

Croham Ward Community Budget 2016/17
02/04/2017 19:37:00.......Posted by Maria Gatland

Once again Jason Michael and myself were delighted to fund projects for community groups and residents in our ward. We tried to engage as many groups as possible and as as many areas of our ward as we could. We hold our ward surgery at St Augustines Church and were pleased to fund two new notice boards that advertise all their community work. We funded physiotherapy mats for disabled pupils at the Rutherford School and a project at Purley Oaks Primary School that helped raise pupils confidence and self esteem through music. Elmfield Ladies Group were delighted we were able to fund a Mad Hatters Tea Party in aid of St Christopher's Hospice and Marie Curie Cancer Care. I am looking forward to opening it in June. We know burglary is a concern in our ward so we were happy to fund leaflets for our Croham branch of Neighbourhood Watch. Finally we know how popular the Food Festival

has become and enjoyed by many residents in our ward and we are delighted to help fund it for another year
