The Mayor of London has today announced the winners of the first ever London Borough of Culture.
The London Borough of Culture is a flagship commitment from the Mayor of London, which will grant £1.35m of funding to each of the winning boroughs, to deliver a programme of ambitious cultural activities, and put culture at the heart of their communities. Of the grant, £250,000 is specifically to help young people from diverse backgrounds get involved in creative projects.
Twenty-two boroughs applied, including our very own Croydon, with Council officers and residents fighting a valiant campaign – working incredibly hard to deliver victory.
The Mayor today announced that Waltham Forest would be the Borough of Culture in 2019, with Brent following in 2020.
Six ‘exemplary projects’ will also share a pot of £850,000: Barking and Dagenham; Camden; Kingston; Lambeth; Lewisham and Merton.
Sadly Croydon Council’s submission did not make the published list.
We want to thank all those residents and Council staff who worked tirelessly on the campaign. We are only sorry that the Labour Councillors leading the efforts were not able to deliver victory with their Labour Mayor.
