Will Croydon Labour help Save Matthews Yard?

We've written to Cllr Tony Newman to ask if he'll join us in fighting to protect Matthews Yard:

'Dear Cllr Newman,

Support for Matthews Yard

We are writing to you out of deep concern for the future of one of Croydon’s seminal creative hubs: Matthews Yard.

Since opening in 2012, following the Croydon riots, Matthews Yard has served as the home for hundreds of musicians, artists and creatives – all needing a base from which to ply their craft. Their community spirit is undeniable and their work providing co-working spaces for fledgling businesses is to be applauded.

Development plans have been submitted for 5-9 Surrey Street which would see the building that Matthews Yard is a part of be demolished, destroying this important business and artistic hub in the process. We believe this is a mistake and call on you, as Leader of the Council, to do all you can to intervene.

At the pre-application meeting in May 2017, Cllr Jason Perry requested that the Council investigate finding an alternative premises for Matthews Yard. Have you made any progress with this?

Croydon’s Conservative London Assembly Member, Steve O’Connell, has already written to the Labour Mayor of London in support of an application to the Good Growth Fund by Saif Bonar of Matthews Yard.

We are concerned to learn that since 2014 your Cabinet Member in charge of culture, Cllr Timothy Godfrey, has refused to meet with Matthews Yard to discuss their concerns and that to date there has been not a single message of support from Labour Councillors. Could you explain why this is please?

Sometimes when you demolish a building, you destroy more than just bricks and mortar. For that reason, we stand behind the campaign to Save Matthews Yard and will do all that we can to advocate for its continued existence.

Kind Regards,

Cllr Tim Pollard, Leader of Croydon’s Conservative Councillors

Cllr Helen Pollard, Shadow Cabinet Member for Culture and Fairfield Councillor

Cllr Vidhi Mohan, Fairfield Councillor

Cllr Sue Winborn, Fairfield Councillor

Elizabeth Agyepong, Ben Joce, Philip Smith - Conservative Candidates for Fairfield
