New deputy leader for the Conservative Group

Croydon Conservatives have elected Cllr Jason Cummings (pictured on the left with group leader Cllr Tim Pollard) as group Deputy Leader to join the current leadership team of Cllr Tim Pollard (Leader) and Cllr Sara Bashford (Deputy Leader).

The vacancy has arisen following the decision of long-standing Deputy Leader, Cllr Dudley Mead, to stand down from the front bench at the mid-way point in the electoral cycle, in order to give his successor time to bed in before the next local election in 2018.

Cllr Pollard, Group Leader, says “I am delighted to welcome Jason as the new deputy leader and I know he will make a huge contribution to the team. Jason has a wealth of experience both in the worlds of politics and business and adds to the team his skills in unpicking the rather opaque decision making process prevalent at the council under this administration.

“I also want to thank Dudley for his decades of service to the people of Croydon, through his work as a front bench spokesman on housing and as as a former group leader and deputy leader. He has also been very active in numerous local charities and foundations, including the Whitgift Foundation, the Garwood Foundation and as a former chair of the board of Fairfield Halls. Fortunately, although he is retiring from front bench service as our housing spokesman, I know I will be able to continue to rely on his good advice from the back benches.

“I should also take this opportunity to thank his wife, Cllr Margaret Mead, for her years of service both to the party and the residents of Croydon, as she too will be retiring to the back benches at Annual Council in May. Margaret has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the ins and outs of social care and health and she will be greatly missed from our front bench, although she will continue to serve the people of Heathfield ward as their local councillor.”

Cllr Dudley Mead said “Although I have enjoyed my time as a spokesman and deputy leader immensely, I felt that it was now right for me to step back from the front line and give a new deputy leader plenty of time to bed into the role. I wish Jason every success in the role.”

Cllr Cummings said “I want to thank the Conservative group for the trust that they have placed in me by electing me as one of the two deputy leaders. I will do everything I can to make them proud of their choice and to deliver a Conservative victory at the next local election.”
