Croydon Council has recently revealed plans to increase the fee for a street trading licence from £89 per year to £3 per sqm a week - a tax increase for some small businesses of over 2,500%.
So if you're a coffee shop or restaurant with seating on the pavement outside your premises, then your trade will be affected. Our Labour Council has effectively decided to tax the ability for residents to enjoy their food and drink in the outdoor spring and summer sun.
Steve O'Connell, Croydon's GLA member, is behind the campaign. He recently said: 'This is nothing more than an attack on small businesses in Croydon. I know how hard you work to run your own business, to face a potential 2,500% fee increase from Croydon Council will hurt our hard-working residents. I’m opposing it.
'The Council needs to consider varying the rate that it's asking our local traders pay. Many could afford an incremental increase to pay for the service, but a huge increase in one go like the one proposed is just unrealistic.'
