Following the passing away of veteran Labour councillor Gerry Ryan in January, electors affiliated to UKIP have triggered a by election by petitioning the council to hold one. Whilst the law entitles them to do this, it is lamentable breach of protocol, in that it has been called before Gerry's funeral. It also ensures that the by election must be held ahead of the forthcoming General Election in early May, which means the tax payer will have to stump up £25,000 to stage it. Had UKIP not triggered this by election it would have been possible to delay the election until General Election day, when it could have been held at practically no cost.
Thanks to UKIP jumping the gun, all parties have now had to select their candidates and Croydon North Conservatives are delighted to announce the selection of Tirena Gunter as the Conservative candidate. Tirena has a long association with Croydon North, and is known to many residents for her tireless campaigning on local issues.
Tirena says "Gerry Ryan may have been a political opponent, but it was impossible to question his passion for his patch and his determination to better the lives of residents in Selhurst. If elected, I am determined to live up to the standard he set and ensure that Selhurst has the strong representation it deserves.".
